The generator raw-water-pump impeller is a wearing part, but there is no defensible change interval that applies to every marine generator. Its life can vary greatly with operating conditions, so the installed model's service schedule must take priority over a generic hours figure.
A proper impeller change also involves the surrounding raw-water circuit. This guide covers interval planning, restrictions and contamination, missing fragments, storage, spares, priming and the checks to make when the generator restarts.
Set the interval by generator model
Start with the exact generator model and its service schedule. Fischer Panda describes the impeller as a wearing part whose lifespan can differ greatly according to operating conditions. That makes a universal replacement interval inappropriate, even between generators performing similar duties.
Record the schedule used, the service action and whether the fitted impeller is new or has returned from storage. This gives the next watchkeeper a clear maintenance position without relying on an assumed interval.
The schedule is only part of the decision. A clogged seawater strainer can damage the seawater-pump impeller, according to Cummins. Inspection and clearing of the strainer should therefore support the model schedule rather than replace it. Relevant model information can be checked alongside the Cummins Onan service page or Fischer Panda service page.
Check why the impeller wore or failed
Replacing the impeller without examining the raw-water supply can leave the cause in place. Cummins connects inadequate strainer inspection with impeller damage, while Fischer Panda identifies restricted suction, suspended matter and installation above the waterline as factors that can shorten impeller life.
| Finding or condition | Why it matters | Required response |
|---|---|---|
| Debris in the seawater strainer | A clogged strainer can damage the impeller | Isolate safely, close the seacock and clear visible debris |
| Long or restricted suction path | Negative pressure can reduce output and heavily load the vanes | Have the suction arrangement and restriction diagnosed |
| Water with high suspended matter | Abrasive particles can damage the pump sealing area | Inspect the pump and investigate contamination |
| Generator above the waterline | The pump can run dry briefly while drawing cooling water | Check priming requirements for the installed model |
| Failed impeller with missing material | Debris may remain elsewhere in the raw-water circuit | Do not assume every fragment has been recovered |
| Leaking filter cover | The source of the leak remains unresolved | Find the cause rather than applying adhesive or sealant |
Close the water cock before cleaning a Fischer Panda raw-water filter. Use the vessel's safe isolation procedure, and do not open the filter while the seawater inlet remains open.
If the filter cover leaks after reassembly, Fischer Panda says to identify the cause rather than seal the cover with adhesive or sealant. A leaking cover and a restricted suction path both require diagnosis, not a workaround around the pump.
Finding lost vanes and fragments
When an impeller has failed, replacing the damaged part does not prove that the raw-water circuit is clear. Debris may be elsewhere in the circuit, so do not assume that all fragments have been recovered simply because some pieces are visible at the pump.
The fact that fragments are unaccounted for is itself a reason to call an engineer. The raw-water path needs to be assessed together with the strainer, suction restriction, installation height, contamination and possible pump-seal damage.
Prime the pump and confirm discharge
Priming instructions must remain tied to the relevant manufacturer document. For Kohler sets covered by its Marine Generator Sets operation manual, the seawater-pump priming sequence before initial start is:
- Close the seacock.
- Fill the hose and pump with clean water.
- Reconnect the hose.
- Open the seacock.
- Start the generator and confirm cooling-water discharge at the exhaust outlet.
Do not reach near belts, pulleys or hot exhaust parts while checking the outlet. Observe the discharge from a safe position. After an impeller service, Kohler uses water discharge at the exhaust as confirmation that the seawater pump is operating.
An absent, reduced or intermittent discharge is not a successful restart. The same applies if the generator produces a high-temperature or high-exhaust-temperature alarm. Stop treating the job as a routine impeller replacement and arrange diagnosis.
There is also a specific warning for Northern Lights sets. If the engine must be cranked for more than one minute without firing, the Northern Lights installation manual says to close the seacock and remove the raw-water-pump impeller until the engine can start. This is intended to prevent water from backing into the cylinders.
Plan spares and extended storage
For the generators covered by its manual, Fischer Panda recommends carrying both a replacement impeller and a spare pump aboard. Match any carried spare to the installed generator rather than treating marine impellers as interchangeable.
Extended storage requires a recorded action. Cummins recommends removing the raw-water impeller and keeping it in a cool, dry place, or discarding it as necessary. On return to service, refit the removed impeller only if it has not dried out or become damaged; otherwise, install a new one.
The maintenance record should state whether the impeller was removed, stored or discarded. It should also identify whether the part installed during recommissioning is new.
What crew can check safely
Crew checks should stay outside moving machinery and hot exhaust areas. Use the vessel's safe isolation procedure whenever opening or clearing the seawater strainer.
- Before starting: Verify that the raw-water seacock is in its normal open position. Clear visible strainer debris only after safe isolation and closure of the seacock.
- After starting: Confirm normal cooling-water discharge at the exhaust from a safe position. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from belts, pulleys and hot exhaust parts.
- After storage: Check the maintenance record for removal of the impeller and the action taken during recommissioning.
- After replacement: Record whether the installed impeller is new. Confirm cooling-water discharge at the exhaust when the generator starts.
These observations can identify that flow is abnormal, but they do not establish where a restriction or missing fragment is located. If discharge is not normal, move to diagnosis rather than repeatedly restarting the generator.
When to call an engineer
Call an engineer when the cooling-water discharge is absent, reduced or intermittent. A high-temperature or high-exhaust-temperature alarm alongside a flow problem also requires investigation.
Repeated impeller failures point beyond the replacement part. The possible causes supported by the manuals include suction restriction, installation height, abrasive contamination and pump-seal damage. Those conditions need diagnosis before another impeller is treated as the full repair.
Engineering support is also required when an impeller has failed and debris may remain elsewhere in the raw-water circuit. Do not declare the circuit clear solely because the pump has been opened or some fragments have been found.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a yacht-generator impeller be changed?
There is no single interval for every marine generator. Fischer Panda describes the raw-water impeller as a wearing part whose lifespan varies greatly with operating conditions. Follow the service schedule for the exact installed model, inspect the seawater strainer and record each replacement rather than applying a generic hours figure.
What should happen to the impeller during extended storage?
Cummins recommends removing the raw-water impeller and storing it in a cool, dry place, or discarding it as necessary. During recommissioning, install a new impeller if the stored part has dried out or is damaged. Record whether the impeller was removed and whether its replacement is new.
How do I confirm that the generator seawater pump is primed?
For Kohler sets covered by its operation manual, close the seacock, fill the hose and pump with clean water, reconnect the hose and reopen the seacock. After startup, confirm cooling-water discharge at the exhaust outlet without reaching near belts, pulleys or hot exhaust parts.
