What we do

A watermaker is a simple idea that needs careful handling: seawater pushed at high pressure through a membrane fine enough to hold back the salt. Look after the pre-filters, flush it properly and pickle it when it's laid up, and it will run for years. Skip those, and the membranes are usually the first thing to go.

We service and repair reverse-osmosis systems from compact units on sailing yachts to multi-membrane plants on superyachts. That covers pre-filtration, high-pressure pumps, membranes, controls and product-water quality, plus the routine things that keep them that way.

  1. 01

    Servicing and pre-filters

Sea strainers, pre-filters and carbon filters changed, boost pumps and the fresh-water flush checked. Most membrane damage starts upstream of the membrane.

  2. 02

    Membranes

Membrane cleaning, or replacement when output or salinity can't be recovered, with pressure vessels and seals inspected while the system is open.

  3. 03

    High-pressure pumps

Seals, valves and oil changed, leaks repaired, and pressure-regulation and relief valves checked.

  4. 04

    Salinity and controls

Salinity probes and product-water diverter valves, flow meters, pressure sensors and control panels checked, so poor-quality water goes overboard instead of into the tank.

  5. 05

    Pickling and recommissioning

Preserving the membranes for winter lay-up and bringing the system back into service in spring.

  6. 06

    Upgrades and installation

Common faults and what usually causes them

Output has droppedClogged pre-filters, low feed pressure, a fouled membrane, or simply colder or saltier water. Change the filters first and compare.
Salinity alarm, or water tastes saltyA worn or damaged membrane, a failed O-ring on the membrane housing, or a faulty salinity probe or diverter valve.
High-pressure alarm or shutdownA fouled membrane, a stuck or wrongly set pressure regulator, or a blockage on the brine side.
Low-pressure alarmFeed water isn't getting through: a blocked strainer or pre-filter, a weak boost pump, or air getting into the intake.
Rotten-egg smell when startingBacterial growth while the unit stood unused without a proper flush or pickling. It usually needs cleaning, and sometimes a new membrane.
Water around the high-pressure pumpWorn pump seals or a leaking fitting. Have it seen to before it gets worse.

The equipment we see most

Manufacturers whose equipment we service. Not listed? Send us the make and model.

  • Sea Recovery

Reverse-osmosis systems widely fitted to motor yachts and superyachts.

  • Spectra

Low-energy watermakers built around the Clark Pump energy-recovery design, popular on sailing yachts and catamarans where power is limited.

  • Schenker

Italian watermakers that use energy recovery to cut power consumption, common on sailing yachts and smaller motor yachts.

  • Dessalator

French watermakers in a wide range of capacities, including Duo models that can run on either electrical or engine power.

  • HRO, EchoTec, Idromar and Aquatec

Reverse-osmosis systems across a wide range of sizes. The principles are the same; the controls, pumps and spares differ.

Mallorca

Watermakers on yachts based in Mallorca

Plenty of Mallorca-based yachts use the watermaker hard for a few months and then leave it for weeks between charters or over the winter. That gap is when membranes suffer. Flush with fresh water after every run, pickle for lay-up, and never run it in harbour water or near a river outlet.

What to send us

The more of this we have, the better our chances of arriving with the right parts. The online booking asks for it step by step.

  • Watermaker make, model and approximate age
  • Normal output against current output, if you know them
  • The salinity or TDS reading and any alarm message
  • When the pre-filters were last changed and the membranes last replaced
  • Whether it was pickled or flushed before it last stood unused

Describe it once — we arrive prepared

Questions captains ask

Sea Recovery, HRO Systems, EchoTec, Idromar, Spectra, Schenker, Dessalator and Aquatec.

The most common causes are clogged pre-filters, low feed pressure and a fouled membrane. Colder or saltier water also reduces output. Change the pre-filters first; if output doesn't recover, the membrane may need cleaning or replacing.

The water being produced is too salty. It could be a worn or damaged membrane, a leaking seal on the membrane housing, or a faulty salinity probe. The diverter valve should be sending that water overboard; don't bypass it.

If it's going to stand unused for longer than the manufacturer allows between fresh-water flushes, yes. We can pickle it when you lay up and recommission it in spring.

Yes. Servicing, membrane changes and pump repairs are done on board wherever the yacht is berthed in Mallorca or the Balearics.
