About Cummins Onan equipment

  • 01

Cummins lists Onan Marine QD generator families from 4/5 kW through 40–110 kW in its marine generator catalogue, with 50 and 60 Hz variants shown. The exact model, frequency and rating need confirming before service is planned.

  • 02

For the Onan Marine QD 4/5 kW model, Cummins specifies a water-cooled, two-cylinder, four-stroke Kubota diesel. Its product data also identifies an Onan alternator, so diagnosis should consider both engine and generating functions.

  • 03

Cummins states that the Onan Digital Display provides diagnostics and engine and alternator information on the QD 4/5. That information, together with any displayed code, is useful evidence before testing begins.

  • 04

Cummins directs owners to the model-specific operator manual for maintenance directions and intervals. It identifies oil and filter changes, battery and connection checks, and visual inspection among typical maintenance requirements.

What we do on Cummins Onan equipment

  1. 01

    Scheduled servicing

We plan routine work from the model, serial number, running hours and manufacturer schedule. The visit can include the applicable fluid, filter, connection and condition checks.

  2. 02

    Cooling-system checks

We inspect the seawater strainer, raw-water flow, hoses, clamps, heat exchanger condition and evidence of leaks. This is important during Mallorca’s warm-water operating season.

  3. 03

    Starting and fuel faults

We test battery condition, cable voltage drop, starting and preheat circuits, fuel supply and control indications. We record the symptom before changing settings or replacing components.

  4. 04

    AC output diagnosis

We investigate no-output, low-output and breaker-trip reports with safe electrical checks of the generator output, protection devices and connected load. The yacht’s changeover arrangement is included where relevant.

  5. 05

    Lay-up recommissioning

After winter lay-up, we inspect the seawater side, batteries, connections, fluids, hoses and exhaust connections, then run and test the set under suitable load. Any fault found is reported before the yacht returns to use.

  6. Book online, upload photos of the problem and our AI technical assistant asks the follow-up questions an engineer would ask. Our team receives a structured job brief, so the right technician arrives with the right parts.

Common faults and what usually causes them

It cranks but will not start. We first check battery state and cable connections, control and preheat operation, fuel level and supply, and any panel indication. We then test the starting and fuel systems methodically.
It starts, then stops and shows an alarm. We record the displayed code or lamp pattern and review available fault history before resetting it. Initial checks cover cooling-water flow, fluid levels, engine-protection inputs, wiring and the conditions when the shutdown occurred.
The generator is running but there is no usable AC power. We check the line circuit breaker, generator output and frequency, then isolate whether the issue is within the set, distribution or connected load. Electrical testing is carried out only with the system made safe.
The temperature is rising or there is little water at the exhaust. We check the seawater intake position, strainer for debris, raw-water flow, hose condition and leaks first. We then investigate the pump, heat-exchange side and other causes of restricted cooling flow.

This is a guide, not a diagnosis. If anything affects safety, stop and call us on +34 971 251 374.

What to send us

The more of this we have, the better our chances of arriving with the right parts. The online booking asks for it step by step.

  • A clear photo of the generator data plate, showing model and serial number.
  • Current running hours and the date and scope of the last service, if known.
  • Photos of the display, alarm or fault code, plus a note of when it occurs.
  • The yacht’s location, access details and whether the set can be run safely.

Questions captains ask

Yes. Our engineers can attend your yacht at a berth, shipyard or anchorage in Mallorca and throughout the Balearic Islands, subject to safe access and the job scope. Send the generator model and serial number, running hours, any alarm code and the yacht’s location. This lets us prepare the visit and discuss the fault before attendance.

A service is planned from the generator’s model-specific manufacturer schedule and running hours. It can include the usual maintenance work indicated in the operator information, such as oil and filter changes, battery and connection checks, and inspection for leaks. We also check the seawater side, hoses and clamps, exhaust connections, and operation under load where conditions allow.

Reduce or remove non-essential electrical load if it is safe to do so, then record the fault code or take a clear photo of the panel before resetting anything. Do not continue to run a set that has a cooling-water issue, fluid leak, abnormal noise or repeated shutdown. Tell us what happened, the running hours and your location. For a breakdown, call the 24/7 emergency line.
