What we do

Stabilisers are easy to forget until they stop working, and then everyone on board notices within the hour. Plenty of Mallorca's anchorages roll in the afternoon sea breeze or when a swell wraps round the headland, and zero-speed stabilisation is often what makes them comfortable.

Fins spend their lives underwater, moving constantly whenever the system is on, so seals, bearings and actuators wear. The control side has to be right as well: motion sensors, control units and the hydraulic or electric drive. We look after both halves.

  1. 01

    Inspection and servicing

Fin movement, centring and locking checked, seals and bearings inspected, hydraulic oil and filters changed, and the system tested underway or at zero speed.

  2. 02

    Hydraulic systems

Power packs, engine-driven (PTO) and electric pumps, accumulators, valves, hoses and actuator cylinders: leaks repaired, oil condition and pressures checked.

  3. 03

    Electric fin systems

Electric actuators, drives and control electronics on newer installations, such as CMC Marine's electric fins and ABT-TRAC's electric systems.

  4. 04

    Seals, shafts and bearings

Fin shaft seals and bearings renewed at haul-out, with each fin removed, inspected and refitted.

  5. 05

    Sensors and controls

Motion sensors, control units, alarms and calibration, including fins that won't centre and systems that won't arm.

  6. 06

    Haul-out planning

Underwater stabiliser work planned alongside antifouling and other jobs, so the yacht only has to be lifted once.

02

Common faults and what usually causes them

Fins won't centre or lock, or the system won't switch onA control or sensor fault, low hydraulic pressure, or a fault in a fin's position feedback.
Hydraulic oil temperature alarmPoor seawater flow through the oil cooler, low oil level, or a pump or valve working harder than it should.
Knocking or clunking from the fin areaWorn bearings or actuator joints, or play in the fin shaft. Have it looked at before it gets worse.
Oil sheen near a fin, or oil in the bilge by an actuatorA leaking fin seal, cylinder or hose. Seal leaks usually need a haul-out to fix properly.
Less roll reduction than beforeCalibration, sensor or gain settings, low pressure, or fins that are damaged or heavily fouled.
Zero-speed mode won't engageOn hydraulic systems, often the electric pump or its power supply. Otherwise a control interlock or fault.

The equipment we see most

Manufacturers whose equipment we service. Not listed? Send us the make and model.

  • Naiad Dynamics

Long-established fin stabilisers, mostly hydraulic and including zero-speed systems, found on motor yachts and expedition yachts.

  • CMC Marine

Italian electric fin stabilisers, the Stabilis Electra range, for yachts from around 20 metres, with control systems that can coordinate fins and rudders.

  • ABT-TRAC

Hydraulic and electric fin stabilisers for underway and zero-speed use. Hydraulic systems often run from a pump on the main engine, with an electric pump for zero speed.

  • Sleipner

Vector Fins, the curved fins designed to reduce roll at anchor and underway, and electric stabiliser systems. Sleipner also makes the Side-Power thrusters.

Stabilisers and Mallorca's anchorages

Many of the island's best anchorages are open to swell from one direction or another, and the afternoon sea breeze can set up an uncomfortable roll. If you spend most of your time at anchor, zero-speed performance matters more than underway performance, and the parts that do the work at zero speed deserve a check before the season.

What to send us

The more of this we have, the better our chances of arriving with the right parts. The online booking asks for it step by step.

  • Stabiliser make and model (a photo of the control panel)
  • Any alarm message, and when it first appeared
  • Whether the problem is underway, at zero speed, or both
  • Photos of any oil around the actuators or in the bilge
  • When the yacht was last hauled out

Describe it once — we arrive prepared

Book online, upload photos of the problem and our AI technical assistant asks the follow-up questions an engineer would ask. Our team receives a structured job brief, so the right technician arrives with the right parts.

Questions captains ask

Naiad Dynamics, CMC Marine, ABT-TRAC and Sleipner fin systems, both hydraulic and electric.

Not always. Power packs, pumps, hoses, sensors and control faults can usually be dealt with afloat. Fin shaft seals and bearings normally need the yacht out of the water, so we try to plan that work for your next haul-out.

Follow the manufacturer's schedule, which is usually based on running hours and time. Hydraulic oil and filters, seals and bearings are the main wear items, and an inspection at every haul-out is sensible.

The hydraulic oil is running hotter than it should. Common causes are reduced seawater flow through the oil cooler, low oil level, or the system working harder than normal. Centre the fins or switch to standby if your manufacturer allows it, and contact us.

Yes. On hydraulic systems, zero-speed faults often come from the electric pump or its supply; on electric systems, from the drive or the controls. Tell us the make and the alarm and we'll come prepared.
